Overview

Concept campaign poster for the Air Zoom Pegasus 40. Hero shoe rendered at a high diagonal against a rain-soaked city backplate, with an oversized "JUST DO IT" lockup, three technical feature callouts (responsive cushioning, lightweight design, durable outsole) and a detail thumbnail strip along the base.

The challenge

Self-initiated. Nike did not commission this, and we are not pretending otherwise — we set ourselves a running-shoe launch brief precisely because it is the hardest kind to get right.

A performance launch poster has to do four things at once: hero the product, carry three technical claims, hold a brand lockup that everyone already knows by heart, and still feel like an image rather than a specification. The failure mode is well known. Add the callouts and the poster quietly becomes a spec sheet with a photograph at the top.

Working against a brand with a visual language this established is the point of the exercise. There is nowhere to hide — every viewer already knows what this is supposed to look like.

The approach

The shoe sits on a high diagonal. A static frame has no motion to borrow, so the motion has to come from the composition itself, and a diagonal reads as speed in a way a level product shot never does.

The rain-soaked city backplate does two jobs. It gives the light something to catch, and it makes the durability claim visually rather than verbally — wet tarmac is the argument for an outsole, so the copy does not have to be.

The three feature callouts are set on a single axis. Scattered across the frame they read as three separate interruptions; aligned, they read as one system, and the eye takes them in a single pass. The finer technical detail goes into a thumbnail strip along the base, held deliberately out of the hero's way, so the top two-thirds of the poster stay an image.

The outcome

One composition that resolves as a 300 DPI print poster, a digital billboard still and a set of social crops — each re-composed for its placement rather than cropped out of the master, which is what stops the lockup arriving cut in half.

Built over a week in Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom.

What it delivered

  • Three technical claims carried without becoming a spec sheet
  • Print, billboard and social from one composition
  • Motion implied in a still frame through composition alone
  • Press-ready at 300 DPI
